For the past few years, I’ve been seeing posts on social media about Fern Resort, and I always wondered if the resort would live up to all the accolades it has received. We recently had the opportunity to stay at Fern Resort, and I can see why families return each year.
Our Room at Fern Resort

We stayed in the Main Inn in one of the Penthouse Family Rooms. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. We really liked the proximity to the Heritage Dining Room, Bertyl’s Lobby Bar, Shirts ’n Stuff Gift Shop, Coffee Closet and offices. Being in the Main Inn is convenient because all of the above mentioned are situated on the ground floor.
As I mentioned, our room was very spacious, and we loved the balcony overlooking the pool deck and the lake. What an incredible view.

The Food at Fern Resort
One of the highlights of Little One’s days at Fern was checking out what was going on at the resort for the day. The Daily Buzz comes out every morning and reading about what the afternoon and evening entertainment would be, what the adult and family programs were, as well as what the junior, youth, and teen programs were.
I’m not kidding when I say that Fern Resort has really thought of everything and takes care of all the little details so you can really relax!
Fern Resort’s menus change on a rotating basis, so there are plenty of choices to select from for all palates. The entrees are creative and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed every single meal we had there.
There are options for children, including an earlier buffet for kids. Little One, preferred to order from the adult entrees. We have been told by many parents that Little One has a refined palate for a child her age.
Little One thoroughly enjoyed all her meals. You can tell she is a beef farmer’s daughter. She loves her vegetables and BEEF!
Overall, the food scored high in our books. Little One enjoyed her Eggs Florentine at breakfast time. What she looked forward to was dessert…which surprised me, because she isn’t much of a sweets person!
The Activities at Fern Resort
Fern Resort has a wide variety of activities planned for all ages. Every day there are scheduled activities for the wee ones, kids, teens, adults and families.
There is never a shortage of things to do if you wish to water ski, go fishing or go swimming in the pool or at the beach.
There were lots of families with kids of all ages at the resort. Little One and her new friend observed the older kids and said they cannot wait until they are teenagers and can roam the resort sans adults! Too funny. This said, parents can rest assured that kids are in safe hands with the staff during activities. My husband and I were very impressed with the Fern Resort staff who were leading the junior, youth, and teen programs.
If parents want to enjoy some of the activities for adults later in the evening, there is childcare offered on-site. Qualified babysitters are available at the resort, so parents can really enjoy a worry-free time if they want to have a bit of time on their own.
The great thing about staying at the resort is that you can do as much or as little as you wish! If you want to partake in any or all of the daily activities, you can! If you want to just swim in one of the pools, you can do that too! I have to tell you that Little One was in the pools almost the entire time we were at the resort! She would even have us quickly eat breakfast and then get to the pool before it got busy! She’s a real water baby!

Little One wanted to check out Speaking of Wildlife, which was part of the Junior Program (ages 7-9). She was really excited about the animals that they got to see. She even got to touch the snake.
We had incredible weather when we were at the resort. Lots of sunshine! It happened to be VERY hot on one of the days, so I told Little One she needed to take a break from the sun and heat, and retreat to a cooler place. She and her new friend that she met at the resort discovered arcade games and pool tables. They played for about an hour, and then we let them go swimming again. The girls spent equal time between the two outdoor pools. They loved the big pool with the slide, but also loved the deeper pool with the diving board.
We were lucky enough to be there on a Thursday so we could enjoy Staff Lip Syncs in Bergwens Theatre. Fern Resort staff performed popular musical numbers and definitely provided lots of entertainment. They were really good!
A Great Time for the Entire Family
We live on a working beef farm. That means weekends and holidays are not days off and the work hours are incredibly long. We don’t get much time to get away, but when we do, we really enjoy our quality family time together.

It’s been a pretty crazy year for us, so this trip to Fern Resort was very much appreciated. See? There’s documented proof/photographic evidence that my husband was in fact able to enjoy some real rest and relaxation! Without having to worry about chores or responsibilities, it was easy to relax!
We were fortunate to be at the resort on a Wednesday, since that is when they offer family photos. We got our family photos taken. We’re waiting for them to be mailed to us. So excited!

Fern Resort has so much to offer in the way of a wonderful and memorable family vacation. The food, the activities, and the entire experience made our time at Fern something we will not forget. This said, the part of our stay that is even more special is the friendships made at the resort.
Little One asked us if we could take one of her friends with us. I guess she thought it would be more fun to take a friend rather than hang out with just Mom and Dad! My husband told her that he wanted it to be just the three of us, because the past few months have been a bit crazy, and this would be a good opportunity to just relax with the family.
Sure enough, Little One made friends with some of the other children in the swimming pool, and they were inseparable for the days that we were at the resort. They exchanged contact info and keep in touch! That made me smile. Back in my day, we made friends on summer vacation and became pen pals. This generation they keep in touch via FaceTime.
Fern Resort gave us the opportunity to have a family get away where we could all get some much needed rest and relaxation, and not have to worry about a thing since they took care of everything, right down to the tiniest details.
Little One says next time we go, we will have to stay longer!
