What are some things you think about when feeding your cat?
Isn’t it funny how all cats have such different personalities? Chloe, our childhood cat (who sadly, passed away a few years ago at the age of 18) had very discerning taste buds. Feeding your cat can be a challenge for some. Chloe was finicky when it came to the dry cat food she was offered, but loved all of the flavours of wet cat food we gave her.
Our cats, Princess Peach and Spike are not as picky as Chloe was. In fact, these two girls just love food!
There are quite a few things to consider when feeding your cat. The information I have regarding cats and feeding cats has been drawn from veterinarians, owners of pet stores, and from articles I have read.
When to feed and how much?
I learned that most cats will eat their meals at dawn or dusk, when they would normally be hunting and catching prey in the wild.
How much food your cat receives in her dish depends on your cat’s age and weight/size, and how active your cat is. Your vet can tell you how much your cat should be eating. When cats gain too much weight, they can have problems like joint disease, heart disease, and diabetes.
Bowl vs. Plate – What kind of dish to serve cat food in
I was perusing the Purina Canada site and came across this post. Basically, we are reminded that a cat’s whiskers help them navigate their surroundings, determine if they can fit through openings, and communicate their mood.
I know deciding what kind of food dish to serve our cat’s food in is probably not something we give much thought to. Does it really matter what we serve their food in? Actually, it does!
Some tips for choosing a dish that works with your cat’s whiskers are:
Tip 1: Use a shallow bowl that a cat can grab food from without impeding her whiskers.
Tip 2: Choose a dish large enough to hold a day’s worth of food, with a lip just tall enough to keep the food contained while letting her easily observe the room.
Tip 3: If you constantly find yourself cleaning up after your cat, consider a wide plate large enough to catch stray kibble or canned food.
Also interesting, and something Little One pointed out the other day, SIDE CHEWING! Have you ever noticed your cat side chewing his/her food at times? When a cat chews food with her back teeth, she will turn her head and it may look like she is having difficulty chewing her food (especially if it is larger pieces of food). It’s nothing to be alarmed about. The cat is just using the best teeth for the job. This also enables the cat to use her entire mouth to chew. The benefits are she can enjoy different textures in the food as well as clean her molars.
Feeding your cat
What to feed your cat
We feed our cats mainly dry cat food, but we also include wet cat food into their diets. The girls both like Friskies dry cat food. They seem to really enjoy the flavour varieties and the texture. For wet cat food, they like Fancy Feast.
Wet and Dry Cat Food provides 100% complete and balanced nutrition for adult cats and kittens. Now that we Spike is a senior cat, her dietary needs have changed and we have been feeding her accordingly.

Little One always wants to be the one who feeds the cats, because she wants to be their favourite person. It’s a known fact in this house that whoever feeds the cats is their favourite person. She thought that today, our older cat, Spike would enjoy eating Tuna Florentine.
I cannot even make this up. When Little One opened the can of Fancy Feast Tuna Florentine for Spike, she actually said, “Mmmm! This smells good! It smells like something I would eat!” Because I am curious, I smelled it too. It smelled good! This Fancy Feast Gourmet Entree was crafted with real tuna, spinach and a delicate sauce. I wanted to see what the entire ingredient list was and read this:
INGREDIENTS
Fish Broth, Tuna, Wheat Gluten, Liver, Chicken, Meat By-Products, Spinach, Corn Starch-Modified, Artificial and Natural Flavours, Added Colour (Red 3 and Other Colour), Calcium Phosphate, Salt, Soy Protein Concentrate, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Choline Chloride, Minerals, Vitamins. B-6702-C.
AAFCO
Fancy Feast Medleys Tuna Florentine in a Delicate Sauce with Garden Greens is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for maintenance of adult cats.
Fancy Feast – A favourite around here
It’s no secret that Spike and Princess Peach love their Fancy Feast wet cat food! It’s hard to say which is their favourite flavour, since they both seem to really enjoy them all!
I had to laugh, because Princess Peach really is a princess. You should see her with her Fancy Feast. Balanced nutrition and a gourmet experience make her a very happy cat.

Feeding your cat is easy when you have so many great options from Fancy Feast.
