Valentine’s Night In: Netflix Picks for Him & Her #StreamTeam

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day in a big way or do you enjoy a Valentine’a Night in?

Truth be told, we don’t really go all out on Valentine’s Day like we did when we were still dating.  Valentine’s celebrations include a lovely home cooked meal, a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolate, and that’s pretty much it. Though we are well aware that a couple must keep the fire burning in their relationship, after a long day of work and then doing farm chores, we’re quite content to just stay in.  Not to mention that the rural roads are sometimes pretty nasty in February!

Actually, finding time to sit and watch a movie or few episodes of a series together seems to be a challenging feat for us.  We’re both really busy, so this may only happen a handful of times in a month. This year, we want to have a Valentine’s Night IN and just watch Netflix together. No. Seriously!

Netflix Picks for Him & Her

Is it difficult to find a Netflix title both you and your other half agree on?  Or do you and your sweetheart have similar taste in movies, documentaries or sitcoms?

Here are a few Netflix picks we think or perfect for him & her.

Riverdale

If you are of my vintage and grew up reading comics of everyone’s favourite teens from Riverdale High, you’ll enjoy this series.  Being a longstanding fan of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the gang, the show was something I looked forward to watching.  I was a bit surprised at the treatment and development of certain characters.  They weren’t like the characters in the classic comics I grew up with.

Veronica Lodge was not as mean as she was in the comics.  Jughead seemed morose and not like his comic book self.  Oh, and Miss Grundy was not what I expected at all!

Without giving away any details, the plot really draws you in.  I’m looking forward to the next episode to see what happens next!

Riverdale is scandalous and exciting!

Santa Clarita Diet

Sheila and Joel are a successful married couple who work as realtors in Santa Clarita, California. Their quiet life gets uprooted when Shelia somehow goes through a strange transformation and becomes the undead (but not in the way one imagines zombies to be).  She requires human flesh to survive.

This is perhaps not quite meant for a romantic Valentine’s Night in with all the gore and profanity, but it certainly has its funny moments.

Bates Motel

Okay, once again, probably not a number one pick for a romantic night of Netflixing with your loved one, but what I like about Bates Motel is the way the story develops and how we get a glimpse into the psyche of Norman Bates.

I do have to say that Freddie Highmore was perfectly cast as a young Norman Bates.  He is CREEPY!  I’m talking sending-chills-down-my-spine creepy!  He plays the role convincingly.  We see just how deeply woven the lives of Norman and his mother, Norma are.

I know it sounds odd that I’d suggest watching this with your Valentine, but the series is a good one!

The OA

I could have recommended a bunch of RomComs to watch on Valentine’s Day, but to be honest, my husband likes romantic comedies more than I do.  I need to be in the mood to watch a lovey-dovey, ride your horse into the sunset kind of movie.  Give me grit. Give me substance.  Or better yet, give me something either really funny or really mind-bending.  The OA is definitely mind-bending.

The OA is science fiction, supernatural, and fantasy all in one show.  Seven years after vanishing from her home, Prairie Johnson returns with mysterious new abilities.  She recruits five strangers for a secret mission.

I wasn’t able to get my husband to watch these with me, but I could not pass up including these two shows on my list.

When Calls the Heart

When Calls the Heart is probably my newest Netflix streaming obsession.  It reminds me of the good, old-fashioned quality television shows I watched as a kid.  Remember the days of Little House on the Prairies and Anne of Green Gables?

The story is about Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher from the big city of Hamilton (and accustomed to high society life).  She moves to Coal Valley, a small coal mining town in Western Canada, where she has her first teaching position.

Elizabeth must learn the ways of the rural west.  The show is filled with heartwarming and endearing characters, lots of humorous events, as well as a glimpse into the sad history of Coal Valley.  I won’t give any spoilers though!

Jane the Virgin

I have a little secret.  I’m a a bit of a telenovela fan.  When I was younger, I remember watching Yo Soy Betty, la Fea and other telenovelas. When Jane the Virgin  popped up on Netflix, I was curious and decided to check it out.  I did not expect to become so addicted to the show.  I’m talking binge watching two or three (or four!) episodes a night!

The story is about Jane, a young, devout Catholic woman who was accidentally artificially inseminated.  Despite making a vow to be chaste until marriage, she ends up pregnant.

The show is told in true telenovela style.  Lots of quirky and surreal plots.  There are so many twists and turns of events that you keep wanting to watch more.  However, if crazy and unreal are not your cup of tea, maybe this isn’t the show for you.

I don’t mind spending Valentine’s Day with a Valentine’s Night In.  It’s actually fun considering we don’t get to hang out much!
