If only our pup, Cupcake could speak! I’m sure she’d be yelling “Mealtime!!!” whenever it’s time to eat!
For me, food has always been about many things. Food means nourishment, but it also means sharing time and company with loved ones. I feel the same way about mealtimes for our pets. It’s about giving sustenance, as well as love and time.
Dogs thrive on routine. Since our pets look to us for guidance and direction, having routines for sleep, bathroom, walk/exercise/play, and feeding are all very important. Consistency is key. I know with Cupcake, she likes being able to predict what will happen and is not a fan of drastic change. She gets extremely upset when we have to go off-Island and have someone puppy-sit her. She is a good natured dog, but she does get anxiety whenever we leave the farm without her.
Cupcake is going to be two years old on New Year’s Eve. She’s still got lots of energy and does the funniest things when she gets excited. One of her latest attention grabber is the flop on her back with her legs and paws up in the air and beg for one of us to rub her belly. She makes me laugh, because she will do this when we have visitors and she wants them to rub her belly. She also does this at mealtimes!
There is absolutely nothing subtle about Cupcake. She will make it known that she would like her belly rubbed. I can almost imagine her saying, “Pet me! Love me!” She really is a sweet pup.
Cupcake knows when it’s time to eat. She has it down to a science when it comes to mealtime. She will sit, wait, look at us, circle the kitchen, sit, wait, look at us, and then flop on her back so we can rub her belly. Then she eats.
It’s a strange ritual, but nothing about Cupcake is “typical”. After all, she is a three-legged pup that can run faster than I can, and jump over fences. I have no idea how she can jump that high or run so fast on just three legs, but she can do it.
