Today, less than 10 % of kids are spending time in nature. That is alarming.
When I think of my childhood, most of it was spent outdoors whenever possible. It really makes me sad to even think that kids aren’t getting outside and enjoying being active outdoors. There is so much to be learned and experienced when in nature.
In a time where more and more time is being spent online, on laptops, on computers, on tablets, on smartphones and in front of the TV, it is apparent that families need to rediscover nature.
Thankfully for me, I now live on a farm, in rural Northern Ontario, in the middle of one of the Great Lakes. I get to raise my daughter in an environment where she breathes in fresh country air, and where the sun kisses her face almost every day. She spends countless hours outdoors as she goes on adventures in her enchanted forest, feeds our farm animals, helps harvest fruits and vegetables, or just jumps on her trampoline.
In effort to keep nature a very large part of our family and rediscover nature, we’ve made it a point to go on family hikes. Manitoulin Island has some beautiful trails to walk. We have our favourites, but are always on the look out for some new spots too.
September 20th is Rediscover Nature Day and now I am challenging you to join me in taking at least an hour to get out and enjoy nature, wherever you are. If you want to spend the whole day outside, even better.
Though we’ve trekked quite a few trails in Ontario and Quebec, it has been a long-lasting dream of mine to see the Canadian Rockies. I have always wanted to visit Banff. Have you ever been to Banff? If not, you may be in luck!
I was excited to discover that Nature Valley has partnered with Colin Harris, founder of Take Me Outside, a non-profit organization that champions children spending time outside, being active and connecting to nature. Take Me Outside is hosting a Rediscover Nature Day contest with a grand prize sponsored by Banff Lake Louise Tourism.
RSVP and post a photo of your family enjoying nature to Twitter or Instagram using both #RediscoverNature and #MyBanff between September 9-30, 2015 for a chance to WIN a trip to Banff National Park to experience Banff and Lake Louise with your family or win one of ten Nature Valley Rediscover Nature Kits! Click here for full contest rules and regulations and to RSVP.
Childhood Belongs in Nature
Nature Valley is taking a stand, encouraging Canadian families to #RediscoverNature; to step away from their screens and create childhood memories outside. They are dedicated to making the outdoors a bigger part of childhood, to give kids today a chance to use their imaginations, to get dirty, to feel the grass in their toes and wind through their hair—to enjoy time outside, just like mom and dad, grandpa and grandma.
It’s time for families to rediscover nature. Nature Valley and Take Me Outside challenge your family to spend at least one hour enjoying the great outdoors. Will you accept the challenge?
Step away from the screens and create childhood memories outside. One lucky Canadian Life on Manitoulin reader will WIN a Rediscover Nature Kit to facilitate your family’s outdoor excursions ($50 value).
