With the first few weeks back at school under our belts, I’m happy to say that Little One is still enthusiastic about being back. She LOVES her classmates, teacher and all the things they are learning. She gets off the bus in the afternoon and yells, “My day was super awesome! I LOVE school!”
I also did something a bit different this year. I told Little One that she is only allowed to watch TV and Netflix on weekends. No TV or Netflix on weekdays. *gulp*
You know what? Surprisingly, it’s been great!
Little One hasn’t fussed or fought with me about it and come weekend, she is happy to watch her favourite shows on Netflix.
Fridays are Family Movie Night in this house
With life being crazy busy, Little One asked if we could make Fridays “Family Movie Night”. What a great idea.
In order to have a successful family movie night, we’ve come up with the following:
Plan ahead. We give Little One the heads up on Monday that we’ll be having family movie night on Friday. Not only does it give us something to look forward to, but we plan what we’re going to make for snacks and drinks, what Netflix titles we’re all interested in, etc.
Pick the family movie together! We scroll through the kids’ titles and pick three that each of us are interested in. From the selected titles, we choose the one we want to watch most. Granted, it’s easy for us since we only have one child. Perhaps if we had multiple children, we would write the titles on a piece of paper, put them in a hat and draw one.
Get those snacks ready! One thing Little One gets excited about is having movie night snacks. She loves the idea of having popcorn and a movie! Last week, we had a popcorn bar and dressed up our popcorn the way we wanted to. Everyone’s popcorn was different. Little One threw in some M&Ms and Swedish Berries. Mine was dill pickle-flavoured. We also made some sparkling beverages. Just sparkling water with lemon and lime!
Get cozy! Grab those comfy blankets and fluffy pillows! Get comfy for family movie night. If you’re lucky, this may even be an opportune time for lots and lots of cuddles!
Wrap it up! The evening doesn’t end when the movie does! We don’t leave things hanging. After the movie, we talk about the story line, the characters, and what we liked or disliked about the movie. I always get Little One to give me a synopsis of the movie just to check comprehension. It’s also fun hearing her take on the movie!
Freaky Friday
Little One really wanted to watch Freaky Friday, so that was the title we viewed last family movie night. This is her synopsis:
The movie, Freaky Friday is really funny. Anna goes into her Mom’s body and Anna’s Mom goes into Anna’s body. Nobody knows that they exchanged bodies. Anna learned more about her Mom’s life and Anna’s Mom learned about Anna’s life. Remember to never wish to change your life. Don’t get a fortune cookie.
Remember, that’s the summary of a six year old. Pretty cute, right?
