I think it’s safe to say that my six year old has very eclectic taste when it comes to fashion. She has never been a follower of all that is popular and often goes against the grain.
I feel guilty that I sometimes wish she wouldn’t be so headstrong and “unique”, and that she would just wear clothes that all the other kids wear. I say I feel guilty because I should actually be supporting her individuality and be proud that she doesn’t want to be like anyone else.
There have been numerous times when we’ve had arguments in the morning about what she wants to wear to school. This has been ongoing since she was three years old and in Junior Kindergarten. She’s now in grade one, and I have since let go and let her express her individual style.
Admittedly, there are days when I want to say, “Pink polka dots don’t go with orange stripes and purple leopard print and black and white lace!!!”
Little One tells me, “Mom! You’re squashing my creativity!” or “This is my original style!”

Me: NO! You cannot wear a lion costume to school!

Being Little One’s mom has taught me some valuable lessons. Mainly, it’s taught me to embrace individuality and encourage and support creativity and individuality. Why be like everyone else? I think I was thinking of being part of society and not standing out. It’s okay to stand out. In fact, being an individual should be encouraged!
Encouraging my child’s #SuperStyle
Fashion and style have always been a creative form of self-expression and no one knows this better than Barbie®. For decades, Barbie® has used the latest trends from around the world to express herself and own personal style. This month, she’s encouraging little ones to #BeSuper by using their own #SuperStyle to show the world who they are inside.
One thing is for certain, little ones develop a strong sense of personal style at a young age. From mixing patterns to choosing bright colours and a variety of textures, children love to express themselves through their style and fashion. Now, with the Barbie® Fashionista dolls, girls can take this one step further and use the dolls to outwardly express what makes them beautiful on the inside and showcase their uniqueness and individuality.

All my granddaughters have their own style. The oldest is very fashionable and dresses very nicely, her younger sister dresses for comfort and likes layering, and the youngest would dress as a princess every day if she could. My other 2 granddaughters dress very similar and like shirts and leggings and jewelry.

My niece loves to mix & match different patterns together and they have to be bright colours! Socks that don’t match seem to be common too.
Judy, funny you should mention mismatched socks! Little One loves wearing mismatched socks, but I firmly believe it’s because we have no idea where all the partner socks go! I really think there’s a sock abyss somewhere…a black hole where all the partner socks go! We have NO matching pairs of socks in this house. I kid you not! 🙂
my kid shows his #superstyle by dressing up

My daughter is 4 and dresses herself. She is always proud of what she chooses – even if it’s not quite what I would have chosen lol.
Too cute!
My middle daughter has a very funky style. She is a big fan of shorts over tights and wild tops. My oldest likes to pair unlikely colours together and it works well for her. Wear it with confidence and it will look good!
My daughter loves the colour purple. She doesn’t really have a style yet, if she likes it she wears it. She likes chilling in her t shirt and undies when she gets home from school. I guess at 4 that is fine…lol
Mine is too little to choose her own right now but I am all for whatever her style is
my niece loves picking out her own clothing and everything has to match including the socks and shoes

Loves wearing purses, the type of clothes she wear – how she likes her hair done.
My oldest daughter loves to wear layers. Skirts over pants, two shirts on, with her high top sneakers. My youngest daughter only ever wants to wear dresses. Getting her to wear anything else is like pulling teeth! They would absolutely love this prize as they’re both obsessed with Barbie! (We own every single Barbie movie that’s been made!)! Thanks so much for the chance and good luck everyone!!
Ha! Rose, both of your daughters sound like my daughter when it comes to clothing!
My child loves to wear pink and purple clothes.
Melinda, mine does too! I keep telling her that pink and purple are like Easter egg colours. She doesn’t care 🙂
