This post could alternately be called “Monday Funnies” because this makes me laugh so hard that I cry every time I think of it. It took me a year to learn what “Put a bird on it” means.
A year ago, I posted an Instagram photo of a bento lunch I made for my daughter. This particular lunch had pear and meat cut out with a bird-shaped cookie cutter. I thought it was cute. I love making decorative bento lunches for my daughter and I love Twitter. The bird reminded me of the Twitter bird.
Well, one of the big brands that follows my Instagram posts and often shares/reposts my photos reposted this particular lunch. There were tons of comments and likes, but as I scrolled through the comments, one comment jumped out at me.
One of their followers wrote:
How very Portlandia.
I had absolutely no idea what the person meant by it, but figured it was either mocking or insulting. I didn’t comment. Not everyone’s going to like my lunches. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions.
Okay, it did bug me a bit.
I mentioned it to my cousin’s wife when we were on our Disney vacation together last month. She started laughing. “Oh my gosh! Put a bird on it! That’s from that episode of Portlandia where they put a bird on everything! Haven’t you ever seen the Put a Bird on it episode?!”
She was surprised I had never seen it. To be honest, I had never even heard of Portlandia before. After watching the episode, I am hooked.
Now I know the meaning of “Put a bird on it”.
I don’t think I’ve put a bird on any of Little One’s lunches since.
