Would you take it all off for a good cause? Not your clothes, silly! Your hair!
Today is World Cancer Day and to show my support, I decided to take it all off.
I shaved my head. By shaving my head on February 4, 2015 – World Cancer Day, I’m demonstrating my support and solidarity for the thousands of cancer patients who undergo treatment each year. And, I’m raising funds for cancer research!
To date, I’ve raised $1015, thanks to my supportive family, friends, and people on Twitter and Facebook! My fundraising goal was $500 and I reached 203% of my goal! I had a “moment” sitting in the stylist’s chair. I cried not because I was about to lose all my hair, but because I thought of all the people in our lifetime who will benefit from funds raised for cancer research.
I’m a person of my word and when I say I’ll do something, I mean it.
I was shocked to read that 40% of all Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime. That is a HUGE percentage of the population!
Participating in the #NoHairSelfie Campaign gives us the chance to show our solidarity with Canadians undergoing cancer treatment and provides much-needed funds for cancer research atPrincess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
I don’t by any means consider myself a brave person. In fact, I’m not daring at all. I do consider all those who have gone through cancer or who are going through cancer to be the brave and strong ones.
Our family has lost loved ones to cancer, so the #NoHairSelfie #WorldCancerDay cause is near and dear to our hearts.
Yesterday, I put out a question on Facebook, asking whether I should go for a pixie cut, buzz cut, or just shave it all off!
One reader said that cancer patients have no choice in the matter when they lose their hair. It made sense for me to just shave it all off. All or nothing.
There you have it!
Fait accompli!
Thanks to the lovely Julie Brown and Amanda Wahl-Watson at The Stylist’s Chair in Mindemoya, ON for being part of my #NoHairSelfie fundraising experience. Thank you to everyone who supported my #NoHairSelfie. Thank you to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre for raising and stewarding funds to deliver breakthrough research, exemplary teaching and compassionate care at the Princess Margaret.
