When Little One was first born, I spent entire days (well into the evenings) in the NICU at Mount Sinai Hospital. I’m not going to lie. Having a preemie in the NICU was a roller coaster of emotions and spending long days and nights by her side, it was physically and emotionally draining. To get a bit of a break, I’d find myself wandering down to the main floor and getting a tea at the coffee shop and browsing through the Chapters Indigo in the hospital. Being an English Major with an affinity for collection beloved tales to build my newborn’s library, I’d almost always find myself leaving Indigo with a new book for Little One.
One of the very first books I bought for Little One was Guess How Much I Love You.
It’s quite fitting, really.
The adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare and his father, Big Nutbrown Hare really do remind us that there is no greater love than the love between parent and child.
Since Little One was a preemie and was doing most of her growing in the isolette, I was urged not to disturb her too much since she needed to grow (and babies do a lot of growing in their sleep). I found myself sitting by her isolette and reading books to her and singing to her.
Guess How Much I Love You is timeless as parents and children can relate to the love Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare share.
Readers can join Little Nutbrown Hare as he learns about nature and explores all the sounds, shapes, and weather in the wonderful world around him in Guess How Much I Love You.
The sweetest part? The exchanges between Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare.
“Do you know what is most special of all to me? You. My very special Little Nutbrown Hare.”
“Guess how much I love you?”
“How much?”
“More than all the little snowflakes dancing in the air now.”
Little One started asking me how much I think she loves me. She answers like Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare. “More than all the stars in the sky”, “More than all the snowflakes in the sky”…you get the idea. When Little One started making it a ritual of asking me to guess how much she loves me, I found it so endearing. Okay, extremely heartwarming. I’m talking heart is melting kind of heartwarming!
There really is no love that can compare to the love and bond a parent has with their child/children.
To this day, Little One still loves the Guess How Much I Love You stories. She’s now six years old and still asks me to read the stories to her at bedtime.
