My Dad always told me that the one gift no one can ever take away from you is your education or the gift of reading. Education and being able to read truly are gifts.
Since Christmas is just around the corner, the thought of gifts are on most of our minds. What will you be getting your kids this holiday? To be honest, Little One has more toys and “things” than any one child should ever have. I do not want her to acquire any more “things”. I’d love to give her the gift of experiences and learning. I’ve always had a voracious appetite for reading. If I had to give her a physical object for a gift, I’d get her books. As a university graduate with a B.A. in English Literature, books are my favourite gift of choice. Little One loves being read to, but I hope as she gets a bit older, she will share my love of reading and start reading chapter books completely on her own.
One of the books Little One loves is Magelica’s Voyage.
My six year old can relate to Magelica and to the story on a certain level. Plus, who doesn’t love a certain element of magic? I like the messaging for young children.
Life happens.
Happiness is our choice.
Sometimes not so great things happen, but being happy is a choice we make. We can choose to get sucked up and consumed by negativity or we can choose to rise above and learn from even the negative situations. Ultimately, our happiness is dependent on how we deal with situations and events.
As this post on the Magelica’s Voyage blog reminds us, it’s easy to feel happy when everything is going right. Even as an adult this is something I am trying to remind myself of. It’s so easy to be mad at others, hold grudges, feel sorry for ourselves or not take accountability of our actions. I’m trying to teach my Little One that her happiness is something that depends on her own decisions. This is hard, especially since this is something even I sometimes struggle with.
As a parent, I want to empower my child. I want her to believe in herself, in her dreams, and to in essence, be a happy person. Again, happiness is always a choice. It’s not always easy to explain this to a five year old, but Magelica’s Voyage helps children discover the power of imagination, gratitude, love, and believing in themselves.
