Many of you may recall my new obsession with the “piecaken“. My friend, Ultimately Chocolate (also creator of the Piecaken blog) introduced me to the world of meshing two desserts into one with the piecaken! It’s a pie baked into a cake! Baking a treat into another treat? What a novel idea!
Interestingly enough, I was recently sent a copy of Dorothy Kern‘s Dessert Mash-Ups, which is a cookbook dedicated to tasty two-in-one treats. I’ve just got to share this book with you. If you are a baker or if the idea of two-in-one desserts pique your interest, this is a great book for you!
Before I get into talking about the book, I have to add that though I personally do not eat many sweets, I do enjoy baking. I enjoy it a lot! Hubby has an incredible sweet tooth and he drools over the recipes and photos in Dessert Mash-Ups!
I’m excited to share Dorothy Kern’s cookbook with you!

One dessert is good. Two desserts are even better, but a doubly delicious mash-up of both into one all-new concoction is the best! This book’s fifty-two inspiring recipes bring a new level of creative fun to your baking, with treats guaranteed to wow everyone at the table.
Dorothy Kern is the founder, writer, photographer, and baker behind the popular dessert blog Crazy for Crust. She started blogging in 2010 to showcase her love of pie but quickly realized she loved baking all sorts of desserts. Her blog evolved into what it is today: a baking site full of delicious desserts that are sometimes crazy, often with a crust, and always served with a slice of life. She lives in Northern California with her husband and daughter. Find her online at crazyforcrust.com.
This cookbook introduces the reader to the concept of what a dessert mash-up is. For instance, Carrot Cake + Coffee Cake = Carrot Cake Coffee Cake or Cinnamon Rolls + Cookies = Cinnamon Roll Cookies.
In Dessert Mash-Ups, Dorothy Kern also explains what equipment is be helpful. She also gives readers some ingredient tips and substitutions. The recipes included in the book are fun.
Just to illustrate how beautiful (and tempting) the photos are, here are a few examples!

The title page for each chapter contains an index of the recipes in that chapter. The recipes are very clearly written and easy to follow. The recipes are accompanied by gorgeous colour photos. I have to warn you that the photos are very alluring. They make me want to bake all of the Dessert Mash-Ups!
There are many recipes in this cookbook that my husband and daughter want me to bake. My husband is eagerly awaiting Death By Chocolate Brownie Cake and my daughter would like me to bake the Strawberry Pie Cupcakes.
For anyone who enjoys baking and entertaining, or anyone who has a sweet tooth (ahem! My Hubby!), this is a great cookbook to have.
