There’s something romantic about the art of traditional letter-writing. The act of putting pen to paper and writing a heartfelt letter seems to be a lost art.
Growing up, there was always something so whimsical about receiving a letter from a friend, family member or pen pal. Receiving a handwritten letter always made my day.
Of course, being a girl whose favourite literary heroine was Anne Shirley, I was a fan of the written word. Plus, keeping letters was something to leave for posterity.
When I was introduced to the #7Cards7Days #HallmarkPressPause challenge, I was thrilled! The mission was simple. I was to send out seven cards in seven days to people who are important to me.
In one week, I sent cards out to friends and family. I wrote a friend to offer my support during a challenging and sad time. I wrote a family member just to say I was thinking of her. I wrote my best friend just to catch up.
I want my five year old daughter to appreciate how special it is to receive a letter in the mail and how wonderful it is to write a letter and send it in the mail to those she loves most. I gave her two cards to send to whomever she wanted to send to. She wrote a sweet note to a friend of hers and we put it in the mail. She received a note in the mail from her friend, and now they are corresponding via letters in the mail. Well, she’s five, so her letters include drawings. Still, I’m very excited about the prospect of my little one and her friend being pen pals.
See? Traditional letter-writing is not a lost art!
It is through a thoughtful note that we are able to reconnect with those we care about most and step away from our busy lives even if only for a moment. In a world of fast-paced communication, text messages and e-mail, it is refreshing to send and receive a handwritten letter. Putting some love and thought into a letter really does mean a lot.
I had a selection of beautiful cards from Hallmark to send thoughtful notes to loved ones in. You can view some cards that “speak to you” on the Hallmark Canada website.
Do you believe that traditional, old-fashioned letter writing is a lost art? Do you still write handwritten letters? Who do you send letters and cards to?
Take the #7Cards7Days Challege! Who will you be writing to?

I haven’t written a traditional letter in a long time but I remember the joy it brought me to get one. Much different from email!

I cherish hand written letters. To me, they express so much more than an email. Knowing the writer took those extra few moments to sit and actually find PAPER and a PEN (not to mention an envelope, stamp, address that does not contain an @ and a mailbox) makes me feel special. I also like to return those feelings.
You know, it’s been a really long time since I’ve sent a hand written note. It’s true, they’re great to send a wonderful to receive. I know some special people in my life that would love to see this in their mailbox. Wonderful share 🙂
For me, its all about Facebook such as saying happy birthday to friends.
My mom loves sending handmade cards so I would love to surprise with a week’s worth of cards. She would be thrilled!

I feel it is a lost art texting has even taken proper language away
I tend to write more around holidays, but occasionally still write a pen to paper letter.
Same here, Stasia 🙂 I try throughout the year, but it’s sometimes hard. I do make sure to do it for the holidays though.
My dad, who is 73 now refuses to get a computer and handwrites everything. I love writing letters and have for years now.
Anne, my mother-in-law is the same 🙂 She writes the loveliest, most heart-felt letters!
With the Internet, I do find that I write significantly less now.
Same here, Yuen! I don’t write as many letters as I used to. Email and Facebook seems so much faster. I do miss the special thought put into a handwritten letter though 🙁
I still write handwritten letters once in a while. Mostly to family members like elderly aunts.
I find I write more letters around Christmas! Usually it’s to go into the Christmas cards we send out.
