I remember as a teenager thinking that there was a specific order that life events followed. First, we went to school, finished university, started a career, met someone, fell in love, got married, had babies, and lived happily ever after.
I had a plan. I would be done university at 22, get married at 23 and have my first child at 24.
I learned that my idea of how life was supposed to pan out doesn’t always follow that order.
Life isn’t like that for everyone.
Not everyone attends university. Not everyone decides to get married. Not everyone wants to have kids. Sometimes those who want to have children have a difficult time conceiving.
If you follow the sage advice of your elders like I did, you make sure you finish your post-secondary education, get your university degree, establish yourself in the career of your choice and make sure you are never dependent financially on any man. You also make sure to travel around the world as much as you can, because when you settle down, it may be a bit difficult for world travels if you’ve got young children.
By the time you’ve accomplished that, you’re already 30! Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but it’s pretty close! I was 28 when I met my husband after several not-so-serious relationships. We fell in love, got married, and decided we wanted a family together.
It took us about a year before Little One was conceived. She was born at 28 weeks and weighed 980 grams at birth.
Having Little One was the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me.
Now she wants a little sister.
Little One hasn’t asked if #TheStorkIsComing, but she has asked, “When are you and Daddy going to make me a baby sister?” Oh, she’s got some doozies like “daddies fertilize mommies’ eggs with love and create babies, right?”
For many, conception is easy. For countless others, however, it can prove to be a challenge and a roller coaster of emotions.
If you’re one of the many who are trying to conceive, I have something very exciting to share with you!
