One of my favourite songs is Don McLean’s Starry Starry Night. The painting, Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh happens to be one of my favourites as well.
For my friend’s birthday, I said I’d take care of the birthday cake. Since my friend and her husband are both artists, I thought Starry Night would be fitting. I was inspired by New York Times Best Seller, Hello, Cupcake! by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson.
Tint your icing according to the instructions in the cookbook. Sorry, guys! It’s not my recipe, so you have to check the book out if you want the exact instructions! Bake your favourite cupcake recipe or if you aren’t a baker or don’t have time to bake from scratch, use your favourite box cake/cupcake mix. I was supposed to make 24 cupcakes, but misjudged my measurements and only ended up with 18. I was short a row, but made do with what I had.
After I let the cupcakes cool, I arranged them, filled the gaps with graham crackers (they were flat and offered good coverage, plus I didn’t have chocolate cookies they mentioned in the cookbook). I piped the outline and did my best van Gogh…which left a lot to be desired. I really should not quit my day job!
Ha! The funny thing is I’m not consuming sugar! Hope the birthday celebrant and her guests enjoy the Starry Night cupcakes!
