With all the touting of praises for TELUS, my friends always ask me if I work for TELUS! The truth is…no! I am, however, a loyal customer and have been with TELUS since I returned from working in Japan back in 2000! Not only do I find their service to be top notch, but I love all the other things TELUS does for their community. Their exemplary initiatives like WeDay (thanks for including me in the event) and TELUS Day of Giving make it hard not to want to sing their praises!
For TELUS Day of Giving, TELUS asked Canadians to share how they give back in their communities for a chance to receive $50,000 of support for the cause closest to their heart. There is one story in particular stood out and I wanted to share it with you.
Through her non-profit organization, Hugginz by Angel, 18-year old Angel Magnussen, a Vancouver Island local, is dedicated to ensuring that every sick child is wrapped up in a warm hug by lovingly sewing customized blankets and PJ’s for sick children across North America. Having gone through her own health challenges, she used her experience as inspiration to help other children, just like her. With Hugginz by Angel and through other fundraising activities, Angel and her family have helped hundreds of children and raised more than $270,000 for a variety of causes over the years.
When TELUS heard Angel’s story and found out she wanted to sew more blankets to help even more children, but didn’t have the space – they just had to help. With support from the local community and Angel’s family and friends, TELUS built her a brand new sewing studio equipped with everything she needs, from new sewing machines, to ample storage for all her fabrics and even a new iPad mini to play her favourite 80s tunes while she’s hard at work. The new sewing studio will help this budding philanthropist grow her organization and wrap even more sick kids with soft, cuddly blankets. Watch Angel’s story here. You can also read more about Angel and how TELUS pitched in to help her cause on our blog.
See? Giving back and supporting their communities make TELUS a company I want to support and they make me want to remain a loyal customer.
Giving back to our communities is part of TELUS’ DNA and we’re consistently inspired by people like Angel who are making a real difference by giving their time and support to people in need. If you liked our video and Angel’s story, we’d love for you to share it further. To make it easy for you, we’ve included a few draft tweets for you to consider, below. In addition, for every Facebook or YouTube share and Twitter retweet, TELUS will donate $1 to Hugginz by Angel up to $15,000 to help keep the organization growing. Funds raised will go toward purchasing more materials and supplies as well as shipping the blankets to kids around Canada and the United States, for example.
