The maple leaf, the Canadian flag, the loonie and toonie, hockey, and poutine are all some of the things that come to mind when people think of Canada. In celebration of Canada Day, some fun foodie creations are always a great idea!
This Canada Day cake is the perfect addition to any Canada Day celebration or BBQ! For some Canadian-themed recipes, check out my foodie post here.
Oh, and how perfect is it that we can enjoy some good ‘ol Canadiana with Netflix?
I am the first to admit that I am a lover of Canadian TV and movies. Not just because I’m Canadian, but because there’s a certain quality in the shows and films that is unequivocally ‘Canadian’. I can’t really pinpoint what that quality is, but it’s something I sense immediately. Don’t you ever catch yourself watching a movie or TV show and saying, “Wow. This feels like it’s Canadian” and then when you wait until the end to see the credits roll, you discover that you were right?
One of the shows we watched as kids was Are You Afraid of the Dark? I was so excited to see that Netflix has Are You Afraid of the Dark. Know why?
Here’s something interesting you may not know: My youngest brother was a child actor and one of his first acting jobs was on Are You Afraid of the Dark! I haven’t watched Are You Afraid of the Dark? with Little One yet, because she gets scared easily. Maybe next year I’ll let her watch a few episodes. She likes watching her uncle’s movies and TV shows.
I’m excited to see that Netflix has a wide variety of Canadian TV shows for kids!

- Are You Afraid of the Dark?
- Johnny Test
- Black Hole High
- Alpha and Omega
- Goosebumps
- Erky Perky
- Eliot Kid
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Netflix also has Canadian TV shows for little kids like our Little One.
- Caillou
- Franny’s Feet
- The Busy World of Richard Scarry
- Super Why!
- Animal Mechanicals
- Monster Math Squad
- Team Umizoomi
- Thomas and the Magic Railroad
We’ve all been having fun watching Netflix as a family. Sundays are reserved for “family time”. We spend the day together and we’re busy on the farm. In the evening, we watch a bit of Netflix as a family.
Netflix has something for everyone in the family
- Little One loves Super Why!, They Busy World of Richard Scarry, and several other shows.
- Hubby is interested in documentaries like Addicted to Plastic and Vanishing Point.
- I enjoyed watching The Chocolate Farmer and I’m planning on watching Being Erica (I’ve never seen a single episode and have been curious).
What are some of your favourite Canadian TV shows or movies on Netflix?

Oh my gosh..that cake is AWESOME!! And I have to agree with you, Canadian TVs and Movies are great, and that’s why I’ve also always loved that Netflix is home to so many of them 🙂 It’s so wonderful to see Canadian movies get recognition and be offered in such a variety to viewers 🙂

I am addicted to House of Cards. My kids love the variety of shows available for kids on Netflix. Don’t know what we’d do without our Netflix!!
Janie, my husband is addicted to House of Cards too! I am hooked on Orange is the New Black. I totally binge watched and finished seasons 1 and 2 in 3 days.
