I sat at her feet, playing under her vanity as she applied her make-up and brushed her hair. I remember looking up at my grandmother, thinking she was the most beautiful woman on the planet. When it came to my grandmother, I was always in awe and admiration. The persistence of memory is a remarkable thing. I often find it interesting how I remember her kindness, virtue and beautiful skin the most!
My grandmother was one of the classiest, most elegant women I’ve ever met. Impeccably dressed, and without a strand of hair out of place, she had a certain charm that exuded confidence and radiated beauty and happiness. Her signature ruby red lips and flawless skin were also what I remember the most about her. To this day, when I smell the hint of Olay fragrance, I am reminded of my grandmother.
I was recently reminded of my grandmother when I looked in the mirror and saw that the quality of my skin had changed. My grandmother had flawless, beautiful skin even up until her nineties! When I looked in the mirror, I saw what I believed to be “freckles”. I didn’t think Asians even got freckles! My brother even commented on them last Summer and said, “Sis, when did you get freckles?!” I’ve got quite a few of them! I was actually excited and thought they were cute, until a girlfriend told me, “Those aren’t freckles! That’s SUN DAMAGE!”
Sun damage. Signs of aging. Dark spots. Ah! I once was proud of my skin. I used to get complimented on how smooth it looked and people often thought I was a lot younger than my actual age. To this day, I still get carded at the LCBO when buying alcohol! The only difference is that now I notice my “freckles” (aka sun damage and age spots). Don’t get me wrong. I’m an advocate of being proud of your natural beauty and focusing on positive attributes, demonstrating kindness, compassion, and things that are beyond the physical world. This said, I’m also an advocate of doing things that make you happy and confident. If putting on some lip gloss and applying some eye make-up makes me feel happy and fabulous, then that’s what I need to do.
Oh, but the beautiful skin! I used to receive so many compliments on how healthy my skin was when I was younger! All those years of sun-worshiping and not being careful to protect my skin have left me with these sun spots!
Now that I’m in my
late thirties, I can really see the changes in my skin. Another thing is that this Winter has definitely been harsh on my skin. With proper diet, exercise, making sure I’m hydrated by drinking lots of water and also getting more sleep, I try to take care of my skin. I’ve also been using Olay to help make my skin look and feel great.
