Everyone knows that the kitchen is the hub of the home. It’s the heart of your house — a place where meals are made and memories are shared. How many times have you thrown a party and instead of hanging out in your spacious living room, guests find their way to the kitchen? Parties always end up in the kitchen.
For me, the kitchen is the most important room in the house, because that’s where I spend a lot of my time. I enjoy cooking, baking, and creating. I love feeding family and friends. This is why I am in dire need of a kitchen reno. Actually, our kitchen has been in the process of being renovated for…hmmm…almost five years now?
Part of the reason it’s taken so long for us to finish renovations on our old farm house is because 1) To do things the right way, we’d need a lot more money than we have at our disposal right now, and 2) I have an idea of what I want, but am not 100% on all the details yet.
Okay, I’ll be honest. I just want Chef Michael Smith’s kitchen!!!
Chef Michael’s kitchen is one of the most functional and beautifully designed kitchens I’ve ever seen. Above photo was found on Pinterest, but the source is http://chefmichaelsmith.com/chef-michaels-kitchen/.
My Dream Kitchen
It pains me to have a kitchen that isn’t really conducive to cooking and entertaining. This is what our kitchen looked like before.
As you can see, the kitchen is really dated. The floors are a horrible linoleum, there’s A LOT of wood (walls, cabinets…did I mention wood walls?). The thing I do love is that it does have a lot of potential, it’s on its own floor/level (yes, the kitchen is the only room on the main floor! A floor all to itself!). The kitchen is also connected to our greenhouse. When opened up in the Winter months, the greenhouse provides passive solar energy to help heat the house. I also start my seeds in there in the Spring. Hubby likes taking naps in there when he comes in from working on the farm.
This is pretty much what the kitchen looks like today. Nothing has really changed.
I’ve even created a Pinterest board filled with ideas I’ve “pinned” for my Dream Kitchen.
Since we do live in the country and we do have an old farm house, I guess keeping a bit with the rustic, country theme might be appropriate. This said, I’d like to inject a little bit of modern and contemporary in there somehow. Perhaps with the sink and faucet, and new counter tops. We’re going to have to completely gut the storage space under the sink. They’re completely unusable and not functional at all. The one thing I absolutely NEED in my kitchen is storage space and more counter space for food prep. I’m also thinking of keeping things ‘out of sight’ by having pull out drawers to store all my pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. I don’t want anything exposed…except maybe for my spice collection. I love the mason jars filled with spices (again, inspired by Chef Michael Smith a few years ago).
My Dream Kitchen would be something with a lot of natural light, lots of counter space and storage space, and an island that we can eat at. I’d also like to make use of our vertical space and maximize wall space upward if we can. I’m not asking for much, am I?
I’m not the type of person who complains a lot or constantly wants more, but I really do need to get a kitchen makeover. Our current one is just not cutting it, especially with all the cooking and entertaining I do.
Here are some sketches my amazing friend (owner of Pebblewood Farm) drew up for me. That’s right. I invite my friends over for tea so I can get them to help me plan out my kitchen reno!
Of course I would love to replace my existing appliances. For the amount of cooking and entertaining we do (I love hosting dinner parties), we need a new stove and fridge. I already have a dishwasher, but again, I’m thinking a bigger dishwasher would be a good idea.
