Growing up, board games and card games were a big part of my childhood. My friends, cousins, brothers and I would spend countless hours playing games at sleepovers. In fact, what I remember best about our Summer vacations was playing rounds of board games and card games and going to bed really late! Isn’t that what Summer’s all about? Having fun with the people you love spending time with the most?
Games are still a big part of my life now. When I moved to the Island almost ten years ago, I needed a way to keep social in the Winter months. Games night was the answer to that. Some good food, good company, and good games make for a fun evening!
One of our favourite things to do as a family is to have a games night at “Grandma’s” (my mother-in-law’s) house. Actually, it’s more like a games afternoon instead of night.
Tips for how to host a great games night
- Make sure to have some great food to serve your guests. Keep it simple, light, and fun! Serving several snack-type foods or finger foods is a good idea. Some homemade hummus and veggies, guacamole, salsa and tortilla chips, and mini quiches are regular games night party foods at our house. Keep a fruit tray and veggie tray handy for people to nibble on through the evening. Also make sure to have an assortment of beverages available for your guests. I usually have a punch bowl on the go so people can refill their cups as desired.
- Host your games night in an environment that is suitable for having people over for games. Make sure there’s enough room for everyone to “hang out” comfortably.
- Have a couple fun games to choose from. That way you can select a game to play that suits your guests.

Don’t know what kind of games to play with your guests?
Mattel launched a Facebook Page for the Game On! Brand complete with a new Facebook app. The Mattel Game On! Brand includes all Mattel’s game offerings like Apples to Apples, UNO, Balderdash etc. The Gameology Facebook app determines your game sign, which tells you what type of player you are and which games fit you best. Check out the app to determine your sign by visiting: Apps.facebook.com/gameology
I checked out the app and answered the questions to determine what kind of player I am and what games best suit me. The results?
According to the app, I’m a Wittian! The games that “suit” me best were spot on! They were perfectly suited to my game personality. Check out some of the games that matched my Wittian personality!
Before our guests arrived, Little One just had to try her hand at the Angry Birds game we received. Hubby and I helped her with the rules and taught her how to play. Needless to say, it was a hit. What kid doesn’t love Angry Birds?
Normally when we have games nights at our farm, we choose one game. This time, however, we played several different games, as the selection was too tempting to just choose one! We started the evening with some Apples to Apples fun. We had to read the instructions, as only one of us had played it before.
Lots of laughs and some competitive spirit when playing Skip-Bo! Little One is considerably younger than the intended age of the game, but she wanted to join in on the fun that the rest of our friends and family were having.
The game playing continued into the night. After some of our guests left, Little One put on her pajamas and instead of going to bed, she joined the grown ups at a few games of UNO! I have to say that I’m quite partial to Mad Gabs. It’s always been one of my all-time favourite games! So much fun and so funny!
