I am a firm believer that music has a place in every home and in every child’s life. Music transcends all boundaries. It has always been so important for me to introduce Little One to music at a very early age. She was listening to an eclectic variety of music even in utero! An appreciation for all music genres is important. Though friends of mine will vouch for me when I say I’m not a fan of some kinds of music, I still believe it’s important to give kids a taste of everything out there. This is how we cultivate creativity in our children – by exposing them to different things and encouraging them to try new things.
I moved to an island where country music and bluegrass are popular. Little One seems to really enjoy the banjo and mandolin. I think that is really cool! I have to say that my almost 4 year old absolutely loves Astrograss‘s “The Colored Pencil Factory”.
The down home bluegrass tunes have an appeal for kids of all ages. I smiled when I saw my daughter just get up and start dancing and pretending to play her banjo! It was her toy guitar, but she insists we call it a banjo now. “Shortenin Bread” is one of Little One’s favourite songs.
There’s just something so organic and so natural about bluegrass and traditional folk. It just gets little kids (and adults) wanting to get up and dance! This is coming from a city girl who grew up listening to rock, alternative, and reggae!
Astrograss is made up of the talented Jordan Shapiro, Sarah Alden, Tim Kiah, Dennis Lightman, and Jonah Bruno. The sounds of the fiddle and the banjo just amaze my little not even 4 year old girl. She cannot get over the fact that “magic” comes out of the banjo and fiddle! I asked if she meant “music”, but she insisted that it was “magic” that comes from those instruments. Isn’t that the most beautiful thing a child so young can say?
The songs on the CD are filled with high energy and enthusiasm. It’s true that music makes us feel. Astrograss’ “The Colored Pencil Factory” certainly does this.

We are big music folks around here. My daughter and I more so than the hubby and son. We listen to a bit of everything. Right now she’s definitely into Kidz Bop, lol. I’ll have to check these guys out, thanks for sharing!! 🙂
My little one is obsessed with banjo and fiddle music. And my mom used to sing me Shortnin’ Bread when I was little. Needless to say I’ll be adding this one to our wishlist. Thanks!
I love exposing Keira to different styles of music (and not be like her Dad who thinks Reggae and Dancehall are the only two styles of music worth listening to) and this sounds like a great way to introduce her to bluegrass!
This sounds so great! As a musician, it’s important for me to instill those roots in my kids and this looks perfect! Thanks Christine!
We always have music on at our house, sometime the radio, sometime CDs. It is the way I grew up as well. SO much fun to now be singing along with my DS to songs.
Sounds like a fun album!
Love music! And so do my kids, especially my daughter. She’s always singing along and dancing to it. This sounds great!
Music is my life. I let my girls listen to all the stuff I do. The classics. With censorship of course. Great review m’dere!
I love children’s music! This sounds like a fun CD and even though my boys do NOT need any more CDs, I’ll probably end up checking it out! lol I’m a little bit of a nut about the importance of music in a child’s life too!
OHM:
Oooooh! I LOVE the Gypsy Kings! Orangie has got really good taste!
Sounds VERY cool! We listen to pretty much all types of music over here! Orangie has requested Gypsy Kings to go with her birthday dinner tonight! lol.
