As a city girl who married a beef farmer, I’ve made it my duty to immerse myself in all things beef farming. Yes, for those of you who knew me in my former life as a world traveler and literary egghead, you are likely shocked at the life I now live. On our family farm, everyone has a job. Even our six year old daughter helps feeding the cattle. Though Hubby does the bulk of the farming, I help him out by doing things like being his assistant when we process cattle, being his stenographer and note taker, helping deliver calves if assistance is needed (usually the cows do not need our help, but if they do, we are there to assist). Yes, I even help out with the crops.
My city friends are probably laughing because they know that when I lived in the city, I did not drive standard (and our tractors are all standard)! Don’t laugh, but the first time I operated one of our tractors, Hubby was shaking his head because I had put brightly coloured Post-It notes all over the tractor! They read: “#1, push this pedal and move THIS stick thing”, “This is the clutch and this is the brake”, “Put your foot on this and then release this”, and “SHIFT”. Hubby explained that I didn’t need notes because there were symbols that told me what to do. I still needed the notes.
Now, life on the farm and being a beef farmer’s wife are
almost second nature. It’s a learning process, but one I’ve embraced. Over the past few years, I’ve enjoyed being part of the Canadian Beef community. Canadian Beef represents the many Canadian Beef ranchers and farmers across our nation. They represent beef farming families like ours.
